What We Don't Realize About Our Tap and Bottled Water

Water Filtration System Edmonton
Do you know what's in your tap water?
In order to understand the quality of Edmonton tap water, CQHS wants to educate everyone on how a local water treatment plant cleans and distributes water to our households.

More than 85% of our water comes from a municipal plant that treats the water to meet potable standards. Then, it distributes the water through underground pipes.

Along the way, disinfection and other agents are added, such as fluoride and chlorine. Although they prevent things like waterborne diseases, these agents don't make for ideal drinking or bathing water. Also, water testing in Edmonton reveals that the treated water picks up ammonia, hormones, pesticides, industrial runoff and hundreds of other contaminants as it travels through the pipes to our faucets. These compounds can cause long-term effects to our health.

Despite that, it isn't cost effective for municipally supplied water to be treated according to optimal drinking standards - though it is considered safe to drink. The reason is because only 1% is actually used for drinking. In addition, it's too costly for municipalities to address water hardness since it's not a safety issue. As homeowners, we have to do it ourselves.

What many of us find more shocking is that drinking bottled water in Edmonton isn't any cleaner than tap water. It's also expensive, unregulated and wasteful. In fact, The Pacific Institute reports that it takes 17 million barrels of oil to make the bottles. Ironically, they end up polluting and poisoning wildlife and our water supply too.

The Problem With Hard Water
Our water problems go beyond the health risks and affect our appliances, plumbing and ability to clean. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium, lime and iron contribute to Edmonton water hardness. They bond with other metals, including the pipes that run to our:

  • Faucets.
  • Shower heads.
  • Refrigerators.
  • HVAC systems.
  • Water heaters.
  • Washing machines.
Furthermore, cleaning surfaces with hard water can leave mineral buildup and residue behind and even damage metal surfaces. When the minerals react with soap, soap scum forms. The same reaction can prevent laundry detergent from working as well, defeating the purpose of washing linens and clothes.

When you have hard water, you end up using more soap to get things properly clean. Hard water affects the ability for soap to lather, so you end up using more dish washing soap, shampoo, hand soap, etc. This can all add up costs and environmental impacts over time.

Hard water also strips your skin of its natural moisture barrier and leaves it very dry. This results in you using more lotions to keep your skin hydrated and it can aggravate existing skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

It's possible for us to identify hard water without water testing in Edmonton. Some signs of hard water include:

  • Stiff, dull laundry
  • A rotten egg smell and rust stains
  • White, milky film on our shower door.
  • Water spots on faucets
  • Sticky, soapy film on our skin
As a result of film building up on our skin, bacteria and dirt can become trapped. Then, breakouts and irritation can develop. Hard water can make our hair sticky, oily and dull too. Fortunately, water treatment from CQHS can correct these problems.

Signs of Hard Water

Getting a water softener installed in your home is a game changer! The trusted technicians at CQHS are experts in the installation, testing and maintenance of your softening equipment. We have everything you need when it comes to installing and taking care of your water softening equipment.

With regards to hard water, home water systems can remove minerals to make it softer. As a result, a water softener system reduces scale buildup in plumbing, water heaters and appliances that our water runs through. With soft water, we benefit from:

  • Extended appliance life.
  • Cleaner dishes and fixtures.
  • Softer, cleaner laundry and hair.
  • Healthier skin.

Water Softener Salt

  • Water softener salt — Also referred to as ion-exchange, this method involves exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions. This process involves the installation of a separate brine tank that the water travels through before it reaches the faucets and shower heads. You should check your tank every 6 weeks or so to make sure you don't need to top up the water softening salt.

Options for Water Filtration Systems in Edmonton

Water Softener Edmonton
An under counter filtration system, like the one shown here, can dramatically improve your drinking water
A good water filtration system can remove the common contaminants found in tap water. Comprehensive home water systems are designed to keep harmful pollutants out of our drinking water. Because of that, they're a feasible way to make tap water healthy to drink. However, there are portable water purifier options as well.

Water Filtration System Options

Drinking water is the most important type because we consume it. For those of us who want to focus on just filtering drinking water, water purifier pitchers, countertop filters and under-counter filtration options are available:

  • Pitchers — These don't require installation and are portable. We simply fill them with water, and the water goes through a filter before it enters the glass.

Countertop filters

  • Countertop filters — This option uses water pressure to force water through a filter to eliminate the contaminants. It does a better job than pitcher filters and doesn't take up a lot of counter space

Reverse Osmosis

  • Under-counter filtration — This system stays out of sight and offers the best quality of drinking water. This method is a water purification process that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove unwanted particles from drinking water. The RO water filter requires regular cleaning or replacement.
Installing whole-house water filtration systems in your Edmonton home can provide customized drinking water. CQHS configures each system to meet your specific requirements. Our system uses 10 interchangeable filters to deliver a variety of treatment options. Since it treats all of the water that flows through the household, it also prevents exposure to contaminants in the shower.

In addition, our chlorine removal system is easy to service. When it's time to replace the filter, twisting off the old and twisting on the new is all that's required. There's nothing messy about it.
